Defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service, cash receipts refer to the total amount of crops or livestock sold in a calendar year.

1. Corn

$6.5 billion in cash receipts

In 2023, Indiana farmers harvested more than 5.3 million acres of corn for grain, which resulted in a total production of over 1 billion bushels of the crop, in addition to another 120,000 acres of corn for silage, which produced 2.6 million tons.

2. Soybeans

$4.7 billion in cash receipts

Indiana ranks No. 4 in the nation for soybean production. The state’s 2023 soybean harvest encompassed nearly 5.5 million acres, producing more than 334 million bushels of soybeans.

3. Chicken Eggs

$1.8 billion in cash receipts

Indiana ranks as the No. 3 state in the nation for total egg production. In 2022, the state produced more than 120 million dozen eggs from an inventory of nearly 36 million layers.

4. Hogs

$1.6 billion in cash receipts

Ranking No. 5 in the nation for total number of hogs, Indiana had a hog inventory of 4.5 million as of Dec. 1, 2023.

5. Dairy Products and Milk

$1.1 billion in cash receipts

Indiana’s inventory of 190,000 dairy cattle produced over 4.5 billion pounds of milk in 2023, equivalent to more than 23,000 pounds per cow.

6. Turkeys

$845.1 million in cash receipts

Home to an inventory of 20 million head of turkeys, Indiana ranks as the third-leading state in the nation for turkey production.

7. Cattle and Calves

$460 million in cash receipts

As of Jan. 1, 2024, Indiana had a total inventory of 790,000 cattle and calves, including 180,000 beef cattle.

8. Broilers

$247.5 million in cash receipts 

Indiana has an inventory of nearly 52 million head of broilers (chickens raised for meat) and is home to 715 broiler operations across the state.

9. Wheat

$155.4 million in cash receipts

In 2023, Indiana farmers harvested 335,000 acres of winter wheat, resulting in the production of nearly 31 billion bushels of the crop that year.

10. Hay

$110.4 million in cash receipts

Indiana’s 2023 hay harvest totaled 530,000 acres, including 270,000 acres of alfalfa, resulting in a production of nearly 1.3 million tons of hay, including 675,000 tons of alfalfa.
