Kentucky Agriculture
In partnership with Kentucky Department of Agriculture
From a booming broiler sector and iconic products such as bourbon to dedicated education and research, Kentucky agriculture is a big deal. The Bluegrass State boasts 69,100 farms across 12.4 million acres of land. These farms raise the state’s top commodities, including chickens for meat, corn, horses and mules, soybeans, and cattle and calves.
A historically important crop for Kentucky, the state ranks first in the nation in equine sales and second for tobacco production. In 2023, Kentucky farmers harvested 36,800 total acres of tobacco, and it was home to more than 111,000 horses and ponies. Beef is important as well. Kentucky is home to 907,000 beef cows and takes the title as the largest producer of beef cattle east of the Mississippi River.
