What You Need to Make Eggnog
If you’ve never made eggnog before, you might be surprised to learn you only need a handful of simple ingredients to whip up your own. Here’s what you need to gather in order to make approximately four servings of homemade eggnog:
- 6 egg yolks
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 cup heavy whipping cream
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Whipped cream (for topping)
- Ground cinnamon (for topping)
How to Make Eggnog
Follow these simple steps to make homemade eggnog:
- In a large bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until light and creamy.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the cream, milk, nutmeg and salt. Cook while stirring until it begins to simmer.
- Slowly the milk mixture to the egg mixture in small amounts at a time and whisk vigorously until completely combined.
- Pour the egg and milk mixture back into the saucepan and continue to whisk over medium heat until thick. Once the mixture reaches the desired consistency, remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla.
- Carefully pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer.
- Cover the eggnog and transfer it to the fridge. Allow it to cool completely. The mixture will thicken as it cools. If you want it thinner, whisk in one tablespoon of milk at a time until it reaches your desired consistency before serving.
- Serve each glass topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon (and a splash of alcohol, if desired).
