Tips for Harvesting Summer Produce

Now that your garden is planted, whether in containers or raised beds, you're just waiting for the fruits of your labor. But how can you tell when it's time to start harvesting summer produce? Read these harvesting tips for five seasonal favorites – tomatoes, peppers, summer squash, melons and cucumbers.

Cucumber

You can harvest cucumbers as soon as they are big enough to use. They can get large very quickly, however, so vines should be checked daily. Letting them get too big can lead to an unpleasant, bitter taste. When they’re ready, use a knife or clippers to cut the stem from the cucumbers. Harvested cucumbers will keep seven to 10 days in the refrigerator.
