7 Must-Visit New Mexico Agritourism Destinations

Did you know there are more sheep and cattle in New Mexico than there are people? Needless to say, the Land of Enchantment has plenty of agricultural experiences to offer tourists and residents alike. Here are our top seven can’t-miss New Mexico agritourism destinations to visit next time you’re in the area:

1. Heidi’s Raspberry Farm

If you’ve never visited a farm dedicated to producing raspberries, you absolutely have to put Heidi’s Raspberry Farm on your bucket list. The team at this farm crafts some of the most delicious raspberry jam around, but you don’t have to take our word for it. It’s won “Best Food Product Made Locally” from Albuquerque The Magazine four years in row. This organic berry farm also offers U-pick events for anyone interested in spending an afternoon looking for succulent blackberries and raspberries to take home for a treat.

2. Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Organic Farm

There are all kinds of unique agritourism hot spots in New Mexico, but Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm deserves a top spot on the list. For starters, the eye-catching property is nestled among 25 acres of fragrant lavender fields and formal gardens. It was designed in 1932 by a local architect who earned the nickname “Father of the Santa Fe Style.” We highly recommend booking a stay at Los Poblanos if you can swing it, but you should be sure to pop by even if you only have a few hours to explore. Tour the lavender gardens, purchase some farm-produced products or enjoy a seasonal organic meal at CAMPO, their casual fine dining restaurant that was voted to have the best breakfast in the state by Food & Wine.

3. New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum

And what better place to learn more about this storied past than the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum? Located in Las Cruces, this museum tells the 4,000 year story of New Mexico’s heritage through tours, demonstrations, interactive exhibits and hands-on programs that are guaranteed to leave you feeling even more in love with this great state than you were when you arrived.

4. Creek Ranch

When in New Mexico, it’s only fitting to spend some time at a dude ranch. That’s right, Creek Ranch in Santa Rosa gives you the chance to live like a cowboy for the duration of your stay. Enjoy everything from relaxed horseback rides through the scenic landscape to telling stories and roasting marshmallows around the campfire. You’ll never run out of things to do with more than 8,000 acres of red desert, canyons and arroyos to explore. Overnight stays include three meals a day, as well, so the only thing you have to think about is how to make the most of each day on the ranch.

5. Rio Grande Vineyard & Winery

It would be a shame to visit New Mexico without penciling time in at a local vineyard and winery. Rio Grande is located in Las Cruces and produces wine made from grapes grown on their estate and others throughout the state. Because they use only the best European varietals, you can be sure that each bottle will leave you wanting more. In addition to their beautiful vineyard, Rio Grande also has a pecan orchard and thriving honeybee colony, which means you can bring home some of the finest pecans and honey in the state alongside your wine. It doesn’t get much better than that.

6. Purple Adobe Lavender Farm

The dry and warm climate of New Mexico makes it an ideal place to grow lavender, which means visitors who love the aromatic scent of this peaceful plant will be thrilled to discover places like Purple Adobe Lavender Farm in Abiquiu. Unlike some lavender farms, this property allows you to schedule pick-your-own lavender experiences in 30-minute slots with virtually no limit. You simply cut and carry all the lavender you can and savor the scent along the way. If you’d rather skip the picking activities, you can drop by for a cup of lavender tea, crafts, music and more.

7. El Rancho De Las Golondrinas

Known as the Southwest’s premier living history museum, El Rancho De Las Golondrinas dates all the way back to the early 1700s. It was a vital stopping point along the renowned Camino Real, otherwise known as the Royal Road that connected travelers from Mexico City to Santa Fe. While this is a wonderful destination any time of year, be sure to look at their calendar of events before you arrive. They have exciting activities all year round, ranging from Renaissance fairs and fiber festivals to Halloween events and annual wine festivals.
