Ingredients

  • 2 6-inch squares cheesecloth
  • Kitchen twine
  • 2 tablespoons mulling spice
  • 1 gallon fresh-pressed apple cider, unsweetened
  • 1 quart 100% cranberry juice, unsweetened
  • 1⁄2 – 3⁄4 cup pourable brownulated light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. Make a spice bag by layering two 6-inch squares of cheesecloth on top of each other. Place mulling spice in the middle, bring the edges together and tie securely with kitchen twine.
  2. Combine spice bag with remaining ingredients, except cinnamon sticks, in a large 8-quart stainless steel stockpot.
  3. Simmer on medium-low heat for 30 to 45 minutes, allowing flavor to develop.
  4. Remove mulling spice sachet and serve in mugs with a cinnamon stick.

Tips & Notes

Brownulated sugar is drier and has a larger grain size than moist regular brown sugar and dissolves more easily. If you can’t find any, use regular brown sugar and decrease the amount a bit.
